Clinical and Bacteriological Studies on Shigellosis

Abstract
Clinical and bacteriological studies were made on 49 cases of infant and childhood shigellosis heated at this Pediatric Department of Maryknoll Hospital, Busan, Korea from April, 1972 to April, 1974.
1. Sex distribution showed 35 of male and 14 of female, the ratio being 2.5 : 1.
2. Age incidence showed the infants of 6 Months to 2years old to be most frequently affected. (55. 1%) The month of most frequent occurence was from May to September, although there were occurence throughout the year.
3. In bacteriological study, Sh. flexueri were most frequently isolated (89%) and Sh. dysenteriae were the next frequent.
4. The result ofsensitivity test rrvesled that Ampicillin was most commonly effetive (75x; and Celimycin was next. 80 to 90% isol_r ted Shigellae were resistant to Chlorampenico¢¥:, Tetracycline and Sulfadiazine.
5. In the case of Ampicillin and Colimycin combination therapy, the improvement of clinical symptom and stool character was occured one to two days.
6. There were 2 deaths and they all were under 2 years. The case fatality rate was 4%.
